We have been refilling our inkjet cartridges for years, and while it can sometimes be a little messy, we have saved at least $1000 to reward us for the effort. Some printers are more "refill-friendly", which is an important consideration in choosing your next printer. Printer manufacturers make their money by selling you new cartridges, so they often sell their printers at incredibly cheap prices (or give them away free with new computer purchases) to capture you as a client for the rest of the life of the printer. Obviously, it is in their best interest to put up some roadblocks to discourage you from circumventing their system. Once you know how to do its really not hard at all.
I have found the best source of refilling supplies (including ink, cartridges, tools, and know-how) is www.InkJetCartridges.com. Contact them before you buy your next printer to ask their opinion about your choices. It will save you a lot of money in the long haul.
